The Sound of Crooked Disco: AC Slater

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

What can I say about AC that hasn’t already been said by people with way better literary skills? Brooklyn’s own AC Slater has been on a burner lately. He’s got an upcoming remix of the Freestylers “Push Up” on Ministry of Sound 12 inch, a split EP with Pirate Soundsystem on Palms Out and a Passions x Mathhead remix on Trouble & Bass. He’s been pioneering a new breed of figity electro along with the likes of contemporaries B. Rich and Mowgli. And if my name dropping isn’t enough to convince you that this is one dude not to be missed - he’s heading into the studio for the next few months to work on some fresh tracks - then check out the (slightly dated but oh so good) Take Your Shirt Off Mix and new track Party Like Us below. Lots more on his myspace including the aforementioned Freestylers remix.

The Sound of Crooked Disco: Benefit Friends

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Boston’s Benefit Friends has been making moves lately taking the term “live PA” to a new level. While most of us are digitizing our vinyl, moving to Serato, or doing live sets through software like Ableton, BF has developed an entirely computerless digital rig of pedals, processors, keyboards, and the like to belt out some seriously intense Italo-electro party stompers. Geeked-out theatrics aside, this is some high energy dance sh!t for sure. Check out his fresh take on the overly-remixed “Push It” below and me sure to visit his MySpace page for more original tunes.

The Sound of Crooked Disco: Jess Jubilee

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Our late night duties this month are coming in the for of Jess Jubilee aka 4am Jess. As one third of the New York/Berlin based music blog La Decadanse and stormtrooper of the Modular Records camp, Jess has here feet planted firmly in the cutting edge of dance music. Tonight she takes us deep into her current obsessions with a special evening of Bassline house and Garage. Crooked Disco regulars that the late night sessions can get pretty insane - from drag queen runways to impromptu stage show to assorted, unmentionable debauchery - and no one is better steering the late-night party ship then Jess Jubilee.

The Sound of Crooked Disco: DJ Hilt

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

This is the easiest/hardest “Sound of” to right this month cuz it’s little old me, your humble party thrower, lighting engineer, and all around fall out boy. Morsy is out of town in Cali killing it so I’ll be taking on Residency duties this month. That means no fancy mixtapes or remixes from me but it also means that I’ll be dropping some tunes you don’t normally get to here at Crooked Disco. Killer tracks from Young Punx, Kissy Sell Out, Funkasaurus, Mowgli, Bart B More, Hustle and Flow, Armand Van Helden, (def. some) Bassbin Twins, Plump DJs, Bass Kleph, Nick Thayer, Deekline, Cut & Run, Herve, DJ V, and more. If you can sort out what all that sounds like in a blender then you’ve got a sweet night of funky-disco-electro-housey-proto-breaks to get down to. Personal efforts and more on my blog, Laugh or Death.

Hurray, Hurray, it’s Crooked Disco time again and we’ve got a stomper for you this time around. Top Billin’ goes to our man AC Slater, Bushwick’s fast riser on the bass heavy electro scene. He’s been throwing down bangers left and right for labels like Ministry of Sound and Trouble and Bass remixing the likes of Passions, The Freestylers, Cameo and more. AC’s doing a few shows before heading back to the studio for months so catch him tonight before its too late.

Taking the live duties tonight is Boston’s own Benefit Friends. Like his contemporaries Girl Talk and Dan Deacon, Benefit Friends creates live Italo-electro using nobs, pedals, and various electronic gizmos (that’s right kids, no Seratos and no Laptop) in a high energy freak-out frenzy. Late night duties go to our favorite Modular Records/La Decadanse stalwart, Jess Jubilee who’ll be bringing out her high energy classics for ya. Resident DJ Hilt rounds out the night with glitchy fidgit house (early) and breakbeats on the late night. As always, heavy bass sound, reinforced lighting and strobes, and an open bar from 10-11. RSVP now and get on the $5 list… not to be missed!
