Taster Tuesday: MJ Cole

MJ Cole Gotta Have It
It’s been a while since I posted a Taster Tuesday but this new MJ Cole joint is so fresh that it could not be ignored. MJ was one of the key players back in - say - 1999 when 2 Step garage, the sexier, more uplifting cousin to grim, was big. Along with Artful Dodger, MJ Cole pretty much was the go to remixer and dropped huge bombs such as “Sincere” and “Changes” and remixing Masters at Work, Goldie, Lamb and Madonna to name a few. For an abridged lesson, just check out the MJ Cole mix by Hardreset below.

Well, fast-forward to 2009 where UK Funky is has inherited 2 Step’s role in the clubs. And MJ is back (he never really left) in a big way with Gotta Have It, a smooth bassline joint feature vocals by Digga. This tune is massive and with a UK Funky mix by can-do-no-wrong Ill Blu, its marked for big things. Look for it to drop in the coming weeks and - hopefully - it will make its way stateside so I can stop wasting all my lunch money on Royal Mail.

Taster Tuesday: DJ P.O.L. Style

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Taster Tuesday this week brings us none other than the main main behind Tokyo’s emergin club music scene… DJ P.O.L. Style. Dj P.O.L.Style grew up in Glasgow, and at the age of 13 started skipping school to practice mixing rave and happy hardcore at home. In 2003, along with the members of Dress 2 Sweat, Wireblock, Stuff Records and a couple of other friends, formed the world famous event ‘Numbers’ and invited guests such as DJ Funk, Diplo, A-Trak, Modeselektor, Ghostface Killah, Kid Sister, Squarepusher and Autechre. P.O.L.Style currently plays around the Tokyo DJ circuit and releases music on both Tittsworth & Ayres’ ‘T&A Records’ and his hometown ‘Dress 2 Sweat’ label. He also runs the ‘Numbers’ event in Tokyo and recently started a new event called ‘Tonight’ with Vice magazine and Turntable Lab Japan.

We’ve got a ton a great beats from P.O.L. for you below. First up is his recent rework of Act a Fool of the Crunk Step E.P. which takes a fresh path to - yup - clubbed up crunk. You can cop that whole thing for free on the excellent Club Base and Wine blog. Then you’ve got one of my personal favorites that we always play out, the super hype B-more styled Get Yo Handz Up. And finally, its a full 40 minute mixtape features tracks by a who’s who of nu-club kids like Kazey & Bulldogg, Rico TUBBS, Maddjazz and more.

And, of course, P.O.L. Style will kicking it at our Crooked Disco party this Saturday at Public Assembly in his NYC debut. All the detail on that here.

Taster Tuesday: Damion Suomi

Damion Suomi on stage

Taking a break from all things boom boom and wicky wah, this week Taster Tuesday turn to the singer songwriter styles of Cocoa Beach’s Damion Suomi. You see, sometimes we need to get out of the club (yes, its true) and kick back with good friends around an oak bar and swill a nice beer or 12. That’s where Suomi comes in. Damion Suomi’s music comes off os one part lost love, one part drunken antics, and a heafty dose of good old-fashion beatnik wanderlust. It’s the perfect music to make memories with.

The tracks below are three of my favorites and come straight from Suomi’s label, P is for Panda, who is streaming the debut album on-line now. Damion is also playing tonight at 8pm (April 14th) at Fontana’s for you local folk so I definably recommend checking that show out.

Taster Tuesday: Risk One

DJ Risk One Photo

Taster Tuesday this week comes with pure club fire from Las Vegas’ own Risk One. DJ Risk, one of the “BumSquad DJz” is a top shelf performer with a turntablist background. From his success as a Crooklyn Clan remixer, to his Las Vegas residencies, his eclectic and unpredictable abilities will have you begging for more. Seamlessly weaving between styles and genres, he clearly stands apart as one of the most creative and technically well-rounded DJs on the market. His dance floor arsenal spans from exclusive mashup to classic party-joints, hip-hop to house, and everything in between.

Risk dropped us two electro-tinged joints for you all and one sweet mixtape for the Speakeasy Boutique in Denver. My favorite is a mashed-up blend of DJ Class’s “I’m the Ish” and David Guetta’s “Love Is Gone.” This is a guaranteed banger and a nice break from all the DJ Class Baltimore remixes out there. Grab all the tracks and the mixtape below.

Taster Tuesday: Phonet - Set Me Free E.P.

Phonat Set Me Free Cover

Hot damn there are few things more exciting than fresh Phonat tracks. In my continued love for funky, glitched up electro a la Miami Horror or Hot Pink Delorean, and from the same stable as The Young Punks and Goshi Goshi (is that enough name dropping), come two amazing cuts from his upcoming E.P. “The ‘Set Me Free EP’ is a follow up to the innovative and critically acclaimed ‘Learn to Recycle’ which was celebrated as one of the most adventurous pieces of electronic music to be released in 2008 and was described as the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody for the acid house generation’.” “Set Me Free” is my pick by choice with its uplifting disco stylings but don’t hesitate to check out “Get Down My Dirty Street” for its ambitious multi-genre cutups.

TADT / The American Dream Team Mixtape - What Dreams Are Made of 4

Some fresh fire from our friends at The American Dream Team by way of the amazing Missingtoof Blog. First up we’ve got the latest mix, What Dreams are Made of 4.0 which is 70+ minutes of serious electro love. Electro has been a bit quiet on the blog for a minute and this is a much needed injection. Setlist in the comments

Then we’ve got two fresh tracks, an updated version of the original, Listen 2 the Music, which is a nice update on that classic house vibe (very Crooked Disco) and a dubstep inspired remix of Trouble Andrew’s Chase Money. Need more, get ‘em over at Missingtoof or catch the AV spectacle that is TADT on April 8th with Crooked Disco alum Eclectic Method at NYC’s WTF party.

Taster Tuesday: Andrea Lai

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

photo of Andrea Lai

Roma’s Andrea Lai is sort of my ideal DJ these days… the one’s with an amazing ability to bounce from genre to genre and still keep a unique sound. As a major player in Italy’s breaks scene for over a decade, Lai is the founder of Mantra Records and the Agatha club night. He also hosts a weekly show, Mondays, on iBreaks Radio. Recently, Lai has been working on production’s alongside blog-favorites The Crookers, and experimenting with a mixture of breakbeat, fidget, and the ubiquitous Dubstep. His new remix of Iltone’s Crush drops later this month and it’s a hard hitting, wobbly, sparse breakbeat monster…

Dropping March 23rd on Dusted Breaks Records.

We’ve also got his latest vinyl-only release, Mierda, thanks to a free download from his myspace page. This one’s got much more of a rolling base stomp and some classic old school whistle and piano samples (sweet!). We’ve converted to MP3 for ya but you can grab the original WAV for a limited time here.

Old Skool Sunday: The Slammer

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Big thanks to everyone who came out to Play Date last night. It was a blast and I am totally bummed we didn’t take any pictures (if you’ve got any, send em over). Throwing a little Old Skool love at you on a Sunday afternoon with the DJ Krome & Mr. Time 1993 classic, The Slammer.

I’m loving that classic UK Hardcore / pre-jungle sound these days (surprise surprise) and this is a classic example with those stabbing keys, sped up vocals, and - of course - those rolling drums. The updated Urban Breakz remix (below) has been getting drops lately as a tasty update at a more club-friendly speed.

Buy it here…
